Project Summary:
The carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are new allotropes of carbon. Due to their outstanding electrical, mechanical and optical properties, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTS) are one of the most promising building blocks for the future development of functional nanostructures.
Unfortunately, all known methods for CNTs growth, arc-discharge, laser vaporization, chemical vapor deposition, are delivering carbon soot which contains many undesirable impurities such as amorphous carbon, metallic catalyst particle, non-cylindrical carbon. Moreover, the CNTs are usually growing in bundles driven by powerful van der Waals forces with different diameters, lengths and chiralities and are often presenting a couple of defects.
Taking into account the above mentioned considerations we are proposing a new setup for laser vaporization technique with the ultimate purpose to synthesize high purity SWCNTS with less defects and narrow diameter distribution.
The proposed new technique is based on laser ablation with two colliding plasma plumes in a reverse background gas flow. The dual target off-axis ablation configuration will avoid the particulates presence in the collected soot. The proposed technique provides several advantages in comparison with existing methods and can be implemented easily for other types of materials.
The proposed project is aiming to demonstrate the advantages of an original synthesis technique and to apply it for SWCNTs growth, one of the most promising advanced materials.
